Wyatt Tee Walker (Reverend)
Wyatt Tee Walker was a pastor, a theologian, a cultural historian and a Civil Rights activist, leader. Walker was a board member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference where he served as Chief of Staff for Dr. Martin Luther King. In 1958, Wyatt Walker helped create a Congress for Racial Equality chapter in 1958; he helped bring the group to national prominence. Walker was also the co-founder of the Religious Action Network of Africa Action, which was established to oppose apartheid in South Africa. He also served as chairman of the Central Harlem Local Development Corporation. After moving to Atlanta, he became the full time Executive Director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which he helped found in 1957. He supported student sit-ins and was the chief strategist and tactician for “Project C”, which was a plan for confronting police and city officials. Wyatt Tee Walker also helped organize the March on Washington, which led to the signing of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act.
