Vivian Juanita Malone Jones
Vivian Juanita Malone Jones was one of the first two black students to enroll at the “all white” University of Alabama in 1963, and, in 1965, became the university's first black graduate. Due to the level of racial hostility faced, President John F. Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard to protect her at school. After college, facing discrimination in obtaining a job, Vivian joined the Civil Rights division of the U.S. Department of Justice and served as a research analyst. She also helped with the “Project 23”, a program aimed at addressing barriers that kept blacks from registering to vote in Georgia. Vivian Jones later became the Director of Civil Rights and Urban Affairs and the Director of Environmental Justice for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
