Thoroughgood “Thurgood” Marshall
Thoroughgood "Thurgood" Marshall was a Civil Rights lawyer and he was the first African American to serve as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court for almost 24 years. His attributes towards Civil Rights includes efforts to end racial segregation in American schools. He also led the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Marshall was involved in racial cases such as Brown v. Board of Education, McLaurin v. Oklahoma State Regents, Smith v. Allwright, Morgan v. Virginia, Harper v. Virginia State Board of Elections, and more. He led in many important legal “rights” cases. Two cases of importance where he defended constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 are South Carolina v. Katzenbach and Katzenbach v. Morgan, which he won. Thurgood Marshall was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1939 to 1947.
