Roy Ottoway Wilkins was a Civil Rights leader and held leadership roles within the NAACP from the 1930s through the 1970s. Within the NAACP, Roy was the Executive Secretary from 1955 to 1963. He also served as Executive Director from 1964 to 1977. During his life, Roy Wilkins participated in many Civil Rights marches and demonstrations. His early involvement in the NAACP included being editor to “The Crisis”, the NAACP magazine. Roy also chaired the National Emergency Civil Rights Mobilization group. He co-founded the Leadership Conference of Civil Rights, which was the premiere Civil Rights coalition. In 1964, he was awarded the Spingarn Medal by the NAACP.
