Marie Frankie Muse Freeman was a Civil Rights attorney, and the first woman to be appointed to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. She practiced law for nearly sixty years. Attorney Freeman’s attributes to the Civil Rights struggle include being instrumental in creating the Citizens’ Commission on Civil Rights. She was nominated as a member of the United States Commission on Civil Rights by President Lyndon Johnson, noted as the first black woman on the Civil Rights commission. Attorney Freeman also served as Inspector General for the Community Services Administration under President Jimmy Carter’s administration.
