Lola Mae Haynes Hendricks
Lola Mae Haynes Hendricks was a Civil Rights activist who worked as a secretary during the Civil Rights Movement. She was the corresponding secretary for Fred Shuttlesworth's Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights from 1956 to 1963. She also assisted Wyatt Walker in planning the early portions of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's involvement in the 1963 Birmingham campaign. Mrs. Hendricks was employed by the Social Security Administration and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She was a member of the NAACP, the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, Southern Conference Education Fund, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Her work towards Civil Rights included helping to organize support and logistics for marches and boycotts. In December 1962 she traveled to New England as a Field Director for the Southern Conference Education Fund, with a mission to raise public awareness in the Northern States regarding the issue of Southern segregation and to solicit donations of Christmas toys for the Movement’s members who were boycotting department stores in Birmingham, Alabama.
