Joseph Echols Lowery (Reverend)
Joseph Echols Lowery was a leader in the Civil Rights movement and a Minister within the United Methodist Church. Minister Lowery co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He served as the organization’s vice president, the chairman of the board and its third president from 1977 to 1997. Lowery is dubbed the “Dean of the Civil Rights Movement” due to his extensive involvement in most of the major activities. His Civil Rights career escalated after Rosa Parks was arrested and he helped lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Also, he headed the Alabama Civic Affairs Association. He also participated in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery March. During his activist years, Joseph Lowery was associated with the Georgia Coalition for the People's Agenda, the Alabama Civic Affairs Association, the Black Leadership Forum, and Lowery Institute.
