Johnnie Rebecca Daniels Carr
Johnnie Rebecca Daniels Carr was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Ms. Carr’s attributes towards Civil Rights includes raising money during the Scottsboro trials to help pay for the defense of the nine boys. As a member of the NAACP, she worked as youth director and secretary for the organization. In 1944, Johnnie and a group of Civil Rights activist worked to defend Recy Taylor, a woman who was gang raped by six white men in Abbeville, Alabama. She and the activist later became part of the movement that supported Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Carr got involved at the beginning of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, after the arrest of her activist-friend, Rosa Parks. She served on the committee of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA), an organization that organized the bus boycotts. In 1964, the Carrs challenged the segregation of Montgomery County schools with their thirteen-year-old son, Arlam Jr., serving as the litigant. The Carrs sued the Montgomery County Board of Education with the goal of desegregation. In 1967, Carr became President of the Montgomery Improvement Association, succeeding Martin Luther King Jr.
