Benjamin Franklin Chavis, Jr., is an African-American activist, CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association. He is also an author, journalist, and serves as the Executive Director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In 1988, Chavis became a vice president of the National Council of Churches in New York City. As a youth, Benjamin Chavis was a statewide youth coordinator in for Dr. Martin Luther King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Through the years, Chavis has been an advocate for environmental injustice. He is considered the “Godfather” of the Environmental Justice Movement.
