Jimmie Lee Jackson
Jimmie Lee Jackson a Civil Rights activist in Marion, Alabama. He was also a church deacon. While participating in a peaceful voting rights march on February 18, 1965, in Marion, Jackson was beaten and fatally shot by Alabama state trooper James Bonard Fowler. It wasn’t until 2005 that Fowler confessed to shooting Jackson and in 2007 Trooper Fowler was indicted for Jackson’s death and sentenced to six month in prison in 2010. Jackson being shot, helped inspire the Selma to Montgomery march in March 1965, which was a major event in the Civil Rights Movement, and his shooting helped with the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Jimmie Lee Jackson was a member of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and participated in the Civil Rights Movement and Peace Movement.
