James Morris Lawson Jr., was a Pastor, a Civil Rights activist and university professor. His attributes towards Civil Rights includes him being a leader in the Civil Rights movement and him being a mentor to the Nashville Student Movement and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He was a member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Congress of Racial Equality. After taking Dr. King’s recommendation and moving to Nashville, Lawson served as the southern director of the Congress of Racial Equality and conducted training workshops for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He trained many noted Civil Rights activist who were involved in sit-ins, protest and demonstrations. He also helped develop a strategy for the Freedom Riders. Later in life, after moving to Los Angeles, Pastor Lawson was active in the labor movement, the American Civil Liberties Union, and movements for reproductive choice and gay rights.
