James Luther Bevel was a minister and leader of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. His attributes towards Civil Rights includes being a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. James also served as its director in the capacity of direct action and nonviolent education. Bevel had worked in the Nashville Student Movement, which conducted the 1960 Nashville Lunch-Counter Sit-Ins, and the 1961 Open Theater Movement. The organization also helped recruit students for the 1961 Freedom Riders. Mr. Bevel was key in helping with the voting rights in Mississippi. He was also the chairman of the Spring Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam. James Bevel also help plan the Selma to Montgomery marches. In 1962 Bevel met with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Their goal was to work towards achieving voting rights, and to ensure that all American children had a quality education.
