James Leonard Farmer, Jr.
James Leonard Farmer, Jr., was a Civil Rights activist and a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. James’ attributes towards Civil Rights includes being an advocate for nonviolent protest and served alongside Martin Luther King Jr. His attributes towards Civil Rights includes James also initiated and organized the first Freedom Ride. He co-founded the Committee of Racial Equality in 1942 along with other black Civil Rights activist. Farmer worked for the NAACP and was elected the first National Director of Congress of Racial Equality. As the Director of CORE, Farmer was considered one of the "Big Six" of the Civil Rights Movement who helped organize the March on Washington, a march for jobs and freedom, in 1963. James Farmer co-founded Fund For An Open Society in 1975. He was also a school teacher.
