Howard Washington Thurman
Howard Washington Thurman was an author, philosopher, theologian, Christian mystic, educator, and Civil Rights leader. His attributes towards Civil Rights includes being a prominent religious figure that was major in leading many social justice movements. He was a mentor to leaders within the Civil Rights Movement, including Dr. King, Jr. He was Dean of Rankin Chapel at Howard University and Dean of March Chapel at Boston University. He co-founded the first interracial, interdenominational church in America. Thurman traveled abroad to India and once asked Mahatma Gandhi what information he should take back to the people in America. Gandhi advocated he tell African Americans/blacks/Negros that nonviolence should be their message to the world.
