Frederick Douglas Reese was a Civil Rights activist and educator in Selma, Alabama. He also served as Minister at Selma’s Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Minister Reese was also known as a member of Selma's "Courageous Eight". His contribution to the Civil Rights struggle includes being the president of the Dallas County Voters’ League, which focused on Selma’s local voting rights campaign, a campaign that eventually gave birth to the Selma to Montgomery marches, marches that later led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Reverend Reese mobilized Selma’s teachers to march for their voting rights, during the time when he was president of the Selma Teachers Association. Reese sent an invitation to Dr. Martin King to come to Selma to join their support to the voting rights campaign. Dr. king and the SCLC accepted their invitation and joined the march. Reverend Reese also served on the Selma City Counsel for 14 years.
