Freddie Lee Shuttlesworth was born Freddie Lee Robinson. He was a Pastor and a Civil Rights activist, one who led the fight against segregation and other forms of racism in Birmingham, Alabama. Reverend Shuttlesworth’s contribution to the Civil Rights struggle includes being instrumental in the 1963 Birmingham Campaign. He co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Reverend Shuttlesworth worked on behalf of the poor and homeless in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also worked with Rev., Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during the Civil Rights Movement. Shuttlesworth was the Pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham (1953 - 1961) and a Membership Chairman of the Alabama State Chapter of the NAACP. The church served as headquarters and meeting place for the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR), which Shuttlesworth founded in 1956, along with Ed Gardner. He participated in the sit-ins against segregated lunch counters in 1960, and took part in the organization and completion of the Freedom Rides in 1961. From 1961 to 1966, Pastor Shuttlesworth led the Revelation Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.
