Minister Benjamin Lawson Hooks was an American Civil Rights leader. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1925. He was also an attorney, one of the few black lawyers in Memphis. He was most proud of being a Baptist minister. Benjamin Hooks also served as executive director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1977 to 1992. Throughout his career Hooks was a vocal campaigner/champion for Civil Rights in the United States. He was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (then known as Southern Negro Leaders Conference on Transportation and Nonviolent Integration (later becoming the Southern Christian Leadership Conference) along with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a member of the NAACP, he became a pioneer in the restaurant sit-ins and other boycotts.
