Al Sharpton (Reverend)
Reverend Al Sharpton has been an advocate for Equal Rights, Civil Rights, Political Justice and Criminal Justice for many years. Some of his early activism began in 1972 when he accepted the position of youth director for the presidential campaign of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Outside of activism, between the years 1973 and 1980 Sharpton served as tour manager for singer, entertainer James Brown. In 1969, Sharpton was appointed by Jesse Jackson to serve as youth director of the New York City branch of Operation Breadbasket, a group that focused on the promotion of new and better jobs for African Americans In 1971, Sharpton founded the National Youth Movement to raise resources for impoverished youth. Rev. Al Sharpton is currently a prominent Baptist minister and Civil Rights/social justice activist.
