Adam Clayton Powell Jr., was born in 1908 in New Haven, Connecticut. During his life, he was a Baptist pastor and a politician who represented the Harlem neighborhood of New York City as a member of the United States House of Representatives. He served from 1945 until 1971. He was the first African American, from New York, to be elected to Congress. Powell, Jr., took over as Pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in the Harlem in 1937, taking over after his father, Powell, Sr. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. also served as New York City Councilman.
